POTHOLE PATCHING EQUIPMENT NEEDS
Asphalt Hotbox Reclaimer

An asphalt hotbox reclaimer is the single most important piece of equipment you'll need to develop a successful pothole patching plan. An asphalt hotbox reclaimer serves two main purposes. First it maintains asphalt temperatures from 0-350 degrees F for up to 2 days. Secondly it allows you to "reclaim/reheat" bulk stored HMA from the plant. Maintaining hot mix asphalt (or cold patch) at the recommended application temperature of 300-350 degree F (80-90 for cold patch) is vital when repairing potholes and an asphalt hotbox will enable you to do that.
Asphalt Recycler

An asphalt recycler is a machine capable of recycling old road millings, chunks, or any other "junk" asphalt material back into plant quality hot mix asphalt. The old asphalt material is loaded into a rotating drum and a heat source is introduced to dry any moisture out and heat up the existing aggregate. While the drum rotates the material is broken down and asphalt cement is introduced as the binder. Although not essential an asphalt recycler is nice to have if HMA is not available in your area such as a remote location or in a colder weather climate in which plants only run seasonal. With an asphalt recycler you can use hot mix asphalt year round. recycled asphalt typically costs between $30-40/ton.
Compaction Device

Whether it is a plate compactor, walk behind roller, ride on roller, or at a minimum a hand tamp, you will need some type of compaction device to achieve maximum compaction density.
